Meet the Maker: Valerie DeVito of Gilded Olive Apothecary

Q: What sparked the idea for Gilded Olive Apothecary?
A: I’ve always been fascinated by my grandmother’s elegant soaps and perfumes. I admired how beautiful they looked and thought of them as little prizes - in their pretty boxes with their beautiful scents. Years later, I gave soap-making a try, and was amazed by the response. People told me how soft their skin felt and how much they loved using it. That’s when I realized I might be onto something more than a hobby. And of course, I wanted them to be pretty to look at, just like Grandma’s.
Q: What sets your products apart?
A: Everything at Gilded Olive - from our soaps and lip balms to our soy candles - is crafted in small batches using the finest plant-based ingredients. But beyond the ingredients, it’s about the feeling. Each product captures the spirit of the 1920s, blending nostalgic charm with timeless fragrance. Little luxuries for those who appreciate beauty, scent, and a touch of old-world style.
Q: Do you have a personal favorite?
A: That’s a tough one, a true Sophie’s Choice! If I had to pick, I’d choose my olive oil soap,
because that’s where this whole adventure began. It’s beloved for its rich, creamy lather that leaves skin feeling soft and clean - never stripped, never dry.
And while I’ll probably forever be chasing the “perfect” candle, I think I’ve come pretty close. Fragrance is powerful - it connects us to our feelings and old memories in an instant. I think that’s why scents like Cuppa Joe and Christmas Past are so beloved. They hold a special place in my heart, and in the hearts of so many of my customers as well.
Q: What do you hope people feel when using your products?
A: My hope is that they feel relaxed, cared for, and delighted by the small moments. Choosing a beautifully made soap or lighting a candle is such a simple way to slow down and take a little time for yourself. It’s about transforming the ordinary into something memorable.
